For many working parents, school holidays don’t mean rest — they mean logistics, childcare costs, and careful diary planning.

So how do you manage it well — without frustration on either side?

Here are a few practical approaches we’ve seen work brilliantly. It also helps that our MD has school-age children so the annual early diary planning is definitely high on her priority list!

Plan and communicate clearly
We highlight and share key holiday dates at the very start of the year. We also encourage early leave requests and are transparent about how leave approval is prioritised.

Focus on outcomes, not hours
Where possible, we offer flexibility — adjusted hours, compressed weeks, hybrid working, or temporary role-sharing. Productivity doesn’t always need to look like 9–5.

Fairness, not favouritism
Balance the needs of parents with the needs of colleagues without children. Having children doesn’t entitle you to specific holiday dates. Set clear policies which will prevent resentment and protect team morale.

Encourage team-based solutions and cross-training
When teams collaborate on coverage plans, and more than one person is able to cover the same role, you often see stronger cooperation and less pressure on managers.

Lead with empathy
Most parents aren’t asking for special treatment — they’re asking for understanding. A culture of trust tends to be repaid i
n loyalty and discretionary effort.

Supporting working parents during school holidays isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s part of building a workplace where people can perform at their best — sustainably.

You don’t need to be an accountant to be a great leader or manager—but understanding the basics of finance is essential if you want to make smart, informed decisions.

Why? Because finance tells the story of your organisation. It shows where the money comes from, where it goes, and what impact your decisions have. When you understand the numbers, you gain a clearer picture of how your team contributes to the bigger picture—whether it’s managing costs, improving efficiency, or driving revenue.

Understanding finance helps you ask better questions, set realistic goals, and spot potential risks before they become problems. It also builds credibility. Whether you’re pitching a new idea, planning resources, or reporting progress, being financially literate shows you’re serious, strategic, and aligned with organisational priorities.

It also empowers you to challenge things when they don’t add up, and to back up your ideas with solid evidence. Finance isn’t just about spreadsheets—it’s about making confident, well-informed choices.

And in today’s cost-conscious, performance-driven environment, that’s more important than ever.

The good news? You don’t need to become a finance expert overnight. Start by learning key terms, understanding a budget, and reading financial reports with curiosity. Ask questions. Get comfortable with the basics.

Because when leaders understand finance, they lead with insight—and that benefits everyone.

Ready to grow your financial confidence? It’s one of the smartest steps you can take as a leader.

As the new year unfolds, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and set clear intentions for the learning and development ahead. Planning your training goals now sets the tone for a year of purposeful growth—not just ticking boxes, but building real capability and confidence across your team.

Start by asking one simple question: What does the business need to achieve this year? Whether it’s improving customer experience, driving innovation, or strengthening leadership, your training should directly support these priorities. The more aligned your goals are with business objectives, the more impactful your programmes will be.

Next, think about skills gaps and opportunities. What do your people need to do differently—or better—to help move the organisation forward? This could involve upskilling existing talent, reskilling for new roles, or nurturing emerging leaders.

Don’t forget to build in measurement and follow-up. It’s easy to plan great sessions, but real impact happens after the training ends. Set goals that include not just participation, but application—how will you know if the learning is being used?

Finally, involve your team. Invite them to share their aspirations, challenges, and ideas for growth. When people help shape the learning journey, they’re far more invested in the outcome.

With a clear plan and a people-first mindset, training can do more than develop skills—it can drive performance, boost morale, and help your team thrive in a changing world. Here’s to a year of meaningful learning!

Every year brings fresh insights—and this one has been no different. As trainers and facilitators, we don’t just teach; we learn with and from the people we work with. So, what did we learn this year from training others?

First and foremost: people are hungry for connection. Whether in a classroom or on a screen, learners thrive when they feel seen, heard, and included. We’ve seen powerful moments unfold not from slides, but from shared experiences and open conversations.

We also learned that practicality is king. People want tools they can use right now. The more relevant and hands-on the learning, the more it sticks. Real-world examples, role plays, and “try it now” tasks made all the difference.

Another big takeaway? Confidence beats perfection. Time and again, we watched participants grow not just in skill but in self-belief. Creating safe spaces to try, fail, and try again is what helps people truly develop.

And finally, we were reminded that learning never stops—for anyone. Every session, every group, every question offered us new perspectives. We’re not just delivering content; we’re part of a learning culture that’s constantly evolving.

So thank you to everyone we trained, coached, and collaborated with this year. You’ve taught us just as much as we’ve shared with you—and we can’t wait to keep growing together in the year ahead. Here’s to more lightbulb moments, laughter, and learning in 2026!

Must-Have Skills for Future-Ready Leaders

The world of work is changing fast – and so is the role of a leader. To stay ahead, future-ready leaders need more than just technical know-how.

They need a toolkit of adaptable, human-centred skills that help them lead through uncertainty and inspire confidence in others.

First up is emotional intelligence. The ability to understand and manage your own emotions – and support others with empathy – is what builds trust, resilience, and strong team cultures.

Next is adaptability. The future is unpredictable, so leaders must be comfortable with change, open to learning, and quick to pivot when needed. It’s not about having all the answers – it’s about staying curious and responsive.

Digital literacy is another essential. You don’t have to be a tech expert, but understanding how technology shapes communication, collaboration, and innovation is key.

Then there’s inclusive communication – the skill to listen, engage diverse voices, and create a space where everyone feels heard and valued. Great leaders make people feel safe to speak up.

Finally, future-ready leaders need a growth mindset. That means seeing mistakes as learning, seeking feedback, and encouraging development in others.

Leadership isn’t just about guiding teams – it’s about inspiring people, navigating complexity, and leading with purpose. The good news? These are all skills that can be learned and developed over time.

Invest in these now, and you’ll be ready for whatever the future brings – with confidence, clarity, and heart.

When it comes to learning and development, the format you choose can make all the difference. With so many options – online, live virtual, in-person, and hybrid – how do you pick what’s right for you?

Online (self-paced) training is great for busy schedules. You can learn whenever it suits you, revisit materials, and go at your own speed. It’s perfect if you’re self-motivated and like working independently.

Live virtual sessions bring people together in real time, but from the comfort of home or the office. You get the benefit of a facilitator and group interaction, without the travel. These sessions work well for discussions, quick bursts of learning, and team collaboration.

In-person training is ideal when you want immersive learning. Being in the room helps build stronger connections, encourages participation, and can spark those valuable “hallway” conversations. It’s especially powerful for topics like leadership, communication, or team building.

Hybrid training gives you a blend – the flexibility of online or virtual learning with the connection of in-person elements. For example, theory online, followed by a hands-on workshop. It’s a great choice for larger groups or geographically spread teams.

So, which should you choose? Consider your goals, your learning style, and your schedule. Sometimes the format is just as important as the content – and when it’s right, learning feels easier, more enjoyable, and more effective.

Hard skills are the teachable, technical abilities – like data analysis, coding, writing reports, or using software. They’re

easy to measure and often job-specific. If you’re moving into a new role or industry, learning hard skills gives you the confidence and competence to hit the ground running.

Soft skills, on the other hand, are the human side of the equation – communication, leadership, adaptability, emotional intelligence. These skills help you collaborate, influence, and build trust. These soft skills aren’t usually taught in formal courses that end with a qualification or credential, but they’re often what set people apart in the long run. Improving how you give feedback, listen or handle conflict often comes through experience, coaching, or self awareness so learning the basics to master them is important.

But, which should you learn? If you’re missing key knowledge needed for your job, start with the hard skills. But don’t stop there. In today’s workplace, soft skills are just as crucial – especially as AI and automation take on more technical tasks. Being able to communicate clearly, work well in a team, and stay calm under pressure are invaluable.

The most successful professionals blend both. Learn hard skills to stay current. Build soft skills to grow influence and impact. Together, they make you not only capable – but truly effective.

Keep learning, stay curious, and remember: technical ability may get you in the door, but people skills help you thrive.

Ever sat through a long presentation and remembered … almost nothing? You’re not alone. That’s where the Learning Pyramid comes in — a simple yet powerful model that shows how we really retain information.

At the top of the pyramid are passive learning methods — things like lectures/lessons/speech’s, reading, and watching videos. While these can be useful, they lead to low retention rates — around 5% to 20%. You might understand it in the moment, but it doesn’t always stick.

Move down the pyramid, and things get more interactive — and more memorable. Demonstrations, group discussions, and practice by doing can boost retention to 50% or more. When we engage with the material, we’re more likely to remember and apply it.

At the base of the pyramid — the most effective method of all — is teaching others. Explaining something forces us to process it deeply and make it our own. That’s why mentoring or coaching can be as powerful for the teacher as it is for the learner.

So what does this mean for training? If we want learning to last, we need to make it active. Mix in role play, real-life scenarios, collaborative tasks, and chances to reflect or teach.

Next time you’re planning a session — or learning something new yourself — think beyond the slideshow. The more you do, the more you retain. And that’s how real learning happens.

Training and development often get lumped together — and while they go hand in hand, they’re not quite the same thing. Understanding the difference can help you get the most out of both.

Training is about the here and now. It’s focused, practical, and often task-specific. Think: learning how to use new software, follow a safety procedure, or deliver a sales pitch. Training is designed to improve performance in your current role — helping you do your job more effectively, efficiently, and confidently.

Development, on the other hand, is about the future. It’s broader, deeper, and more personal. Development might involve growing leadership skills, emotional intelligence, or strategic thinking — qualities that prepare you for future roles, bigger challenges, or long-term career goals.

Put simply: training helps you do, development helps you grow.

The best organisations invest in both. Training builds immediate competence, while development nurtures potential. Together, they create a strong, resilient workforce that’s equipped for today and ready for tomorrow.

For individuals, it’s a powerful combo. Training gives you the tools to succeed now. Development opens the door to what’s next.

So, whether you’re just starting out or managing a team, take a moment to reflect: What skills do I need right now — and who do I want to become next? When you balance training and development, you’re not just ticking boxes — you’re building a meaningful, lasting career.

No matter what industry you’re in — public sector, manufacturing, transport, finance, hospitality, healthcare — one fact remains the same: the world doesn’t stand still. New technologies, customer expectations, regulations, and ways of working are constantly evolving. That’s why ongoing training isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity.

Think of training not as a one-time event, but as a mindset. It keeps your team sharp, adaptable, and motivated. It helps people grow their skills, take on new challenges, and feel confident in what they do. It’s not just about learning how to do something better — it’s about staying relevant and future-ready.

In fast-paced environments, the companies that thrive are the ones that invest in continuous learning. They’re more innovative, more resilient, and more attractive to top talent. Why? Because people want to work where they’re encouraged to grow.

But ongoing training isn’t just good for business — it’s good for people. It boosts morale, builds confidence, and helps individuals see a clear path for progression. It shows employees they’re valued, and that their development matters.

Whether it’s mastering a new tool, brushing up on leadership skills, or learning how to work better as a team, ongoing training creates a culture of curiosity and improvement. And in today’s world, that’s one of the most powerful cultures you can build.

So whatever your role, whatever your industry — keep learning. Because when people grow, everything grows.
